Chihuahua

Chihuahua is considered as the smallest dog in the world. The breed was named after a mexican state. There are many versions on how Chihuahua ended up in Mexico. Some say that Chihuahuas were brought by the chinese and some claim that Chihuahuas were bred by the aztec from the dogs of spanish concistadors.

One theory says that chihuahuas are originally from the island of Malta. This therory is supported by a fresco painted by Botticelli to the Sistine Chappel. The wildest theory claims that chihuahuas are from outer space because of the molera in their head.

One thing is for sure. Chihuahua is a very old breed. From Mexico archeologists have found statues and sculptures from years 500 B.C. and 2000 B.C. that portray chihuahuas. The findings present low dogs with large diagonally placed ears and a flat tail just like chihuahuas today.

During the Aztec era Chihuahua was highly respected and she had and important part in religious seremonies. Chihuahuas were used like hot water bottles to relieve the symptoms of different kind of diseases such as astma and reumatism.

The first Chihuahua was brought to America from Mexico in the 19th century. Even then there were two different coat types, a long coated and a smooth coated one. To Finland the first Chihuahuas arrived from Sweden in 1964 and they were both smooth coated ones. The first long coated Chihuahua arrived to Finland in 1968 from England.

Chihuahua is a big dog in a small package. She is affectionate, lively and sometimes even too courageous. Even though chihuahua is a small sized dog it should be educated just like bigger dogs. Though chihuahuas are collaborate, inside every chihuahua there is a small donky who wants to do things her own way.

By being overly protective and by educating Your Chihuahua the wrong way, she can easyly become very aggressive. Chihuahuas are companion dogs but you can get an interessing companion for dogshows, agility and obedience fields and buddy activities.

You can get more information from Your local dog or chihuahua club.
